MATHIKETTAN SHOLA NATIONAL PARK

Mathikettan Shola National Park is a beautiful place, located in the Idukki district of the state of Kerala. The park is located between other reserve forests like Eravikulam National Park and Pampadam Shola National Park. It was declared as a National Park in the year of 2003. Total area of the park is about 12.82 Km2. The park was part of the Cardamom Hill Reserve region till it was notified as a national park. The name of the park has been derived from a Tamil term which literally refers to ‘mind confuser’. It has been so named as the paths inside the forest are quite confusing according to the local folks. The local people attribute its name to the fact that one who enters the dense forests in the Park can easily get lost. The park is home to beautiful and rare animals like Tigers, Panthers, Elephants, Giant grizzled squirrel, Flying squirrels, Spotted deer and Nilgiri tahr.

SILENT VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

This park is one of the last undisturbed tracts of South Western Ghats mountain rain forest and tropical moist evergreen forest in India. It was declared as a National Park in the year of 1984. Core area of the park is about 89.52 Km2 and the buffer zone of the park is about 148 Km2. Total area of the park is about 237.52 Km2. A varied blend of habitats supporting a huge biodiversity can be found here. The park also has immense historical significance. Silent Valley is considered one of the most ecologically diverse areas on the planet. Silent Valley National Park is situated in the core of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The park is a rich storehouse of biodiversity. The Park is famous for its unique and diverse wildlife and bird species. The rich wildlife includes Long tailed macaque, Nilgiri langur, Malabar giant squirrel, Nilgiri tahr, Hairy winged bat, Hanuman langur, Tiger, Leopard, Leopard cat, Jungle cat, Fishing cat, Common palm civet, Small Indian civet etc.

PAMPADUM SHOLA NATIONAL PARK

Pambadum Shola National Park is a beautiful place, located along the Western Ghats in the Idukki district of the state of Kerala. It is the smallest National park in the Kerala. The park is supervised by Kerala Wildlife and Forest department and Munnar Wildlife Division, along with other National Parks and Sanctuary like Erevikulam National Park, Mathikettan Shola National Park, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Anamudi Shola National Park and the Kurinjimala Sanctuary. Pambadum Shola National Park is a part of Annamalai sub-cluster and has been nominated for World Heritage site status under UNESCO’s world heritage Programme. The name (Pambadum Shola) of the park means “the forest where the snake dances”, derived from three Tamil words, “paamp”, which means “snake”; “aattam”, means “dance”; and “cholai”, means “forest”. It was declared as a National park in the year of 2003. Total area of the park is about 1.32 Km2. Ecotourism facilities like trekking and night camping are allowed in the region. The national park consists of wide range of habitat types.

WAYANAD WILDLIFE SANCTURY

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary was formed in 1973 and was brought under the Project Elephant in 1991–92. This sanctuary occupies an area of 345 km2. It is the second largest one in the state of Kerala. The sanctuary is separated into two disconnected parts known as the North Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and South Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary. The area in between the two parts was originally a forest region, though it is now occupied majorly by plantations.Wayanad district has the largest population of Adivasi in Kerala. Scheduled tribes here include Paniyas, Kurumas, Adiyars, Kurichyas, Ooralis and Kattunaikkans. The sanctuary is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The Western Ghats, Nilgiri Sub-Cluster (6,000+ km²), including all of the sanctuary, is under consideration by the World Heritage Committee for selection as a World Heritage Site. Chief Wildlife Warden of Kerala ordered the hunt for the animal after mass protests erupted as the tiger had been carrying away domestic animals.

ERAVIKULAM NATIONAL PARK

Eravikulam National Park is a beautiful place, located along the Western Ghats in the Idukki district of the state of Kerala. Eravikulam National Park is also known as Rajamalai National Park. It was declared a wildlife sanctuary in the year of 1975. Total area of the park is about 97 Km2. The main motive behind this was to protect and conserve rare Nilgiri Tahr.The Eravikulam National Park is covered with grassland, shrubs and forest. The park has a rare collection of varieties of trees and shrubs. The park is famous for its biodiversity. It has the largest population of endangered (IUCN) Nilgiri Tahr (Hemitragus hylocrius). The entry of private vehicles is prohibited in the park. Only few mini buses are operated inside in order to control the environment pollution. The trips are organized by the forest department. The park is also the land of “Neelakurinji”, a flower that blooms once in twelve years. The Park is breathtakingly beautiful and is easily comparable to the best of mountain ranges in the Alps.

ANAMUDI SHOLA NATIONAL PARK

Anamudi Shola National Park is a beautiful place, located along the Western Ghats in the Idukki district of the state of Kerala. Anamudi Shola National Park is a part of Annamalai sub-cluster and has been nominated for World Heritage site status under UNESCO’s World heritage Programme. It was declared as a National Park in the year of 2003. Total area of the park is about 7.5 Km2. Anamudi Shola National Park consists of three shola reserve forests (Idivara Shola Reserve, Pullardi Shola Reserve and Mannavan Shola Reserve). Anamudi Shola National Park is surrounded by Eravikulam National Park, Pambadum Shola National Park, Chinnar Wildlife sanctuary, Mathikettan Shola National Park. It is supervised by Kerala Wildlife and Forest department and Munnar Wildlife Division, along with other National Parks and Sanctuary like Erevikulam National Park, Mathikettan Shola National Park, Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary, Pambadum Shola National Park and the Kurinjimala Sanctuary.

PERIYAAR WILDLIFE SANCTURY

Periyar Tiger Reserve, Thekkady, is an example of nature’s bounty with great scenic charm, rich bio diversity and providing veritable visitor satisfaction. Sprawled over an area of 925 Sq .km., Periyar is one of the 48 tiger reserves in India. Zealously guarded and efficiently managed reserve is a repository of rare, endemic and endangered flora A and fauna and forms the major watershed of two important rivers of Kerala, the Periyar and Pamba. Periyar National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary (PNP) is a protected area in the districts of Idukki, Kottayam and Pathanamthitta in Kerala, India. It is notable as an elephant reserve and a tiger reserve. The park is often called the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary or Thekkady. It is located high in the Cardamom Hills and Pandalam Hills of the south Western Ghats along the border with Tamil Nadu.

KUMARAKOM BIRD SANCTURY
