Kashmir is a region located in the northernmost part of the Indian subcontinent, bordered by India, Pakistan, and China. It has been a subject of dispute between India and Pakistan since the two countries gained independence in 1947. The region is predominantly Muslim, but also has a Hindu and Buddhist population.
The conflict in Kashmir has resulted in a significant loss of life and displacement of people. India administers two-thirds of the region as the state of Jammu and Kashmir, while Pakistan controls the other one-third as the territories of Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan.
There have been several attempts to resolve the conflict, but it remains unresolved, with both India and Pakistan claiming sovereignty over the entire region. The issue of Kashmir has also been a major source of tension between the two nuclear-armed countries.
